What Dog Volunteers Do at CACC

Dog walking is one of the core volunteer roles at CACC, but volunteers can help dogs in several different ways. Some opportunities focus on getting dogs out of their kennels for exercise and one-on-one attention, while others help with enrichment, adoption and activities that give dogs more chances to engage with people and their surroundings.

• Walk dogs and give them one-on-one time outside their kennels
• Help prospective adopters meet and spend time with available dogs
• Provide treats, toys and other enrichment for dogs in the pavilions
• Join scheduled outings that give dogs longer periods of exercise and attention
• Take part in dog activities such as playgroups, agility and nose work
• Help dogs get noticed through adoption events and other CACC outreach programs

How to Become a CACC Volunteer

CACC volunteers must be at least 18 years old. The process begins with a New Volunteer Information Session, where prospective volunteers learn how the shelter operates, hear about current volunteer opportunities and receive instructions for completing the application process.

Prospective volunteers then complete the required application materials, a City of Chicago fingerprint background check and a short interview. Dog volunteers also complete orientation, training and mentoring before beginning regular dog-handling shifts.

CACC asks volunteers for a minimum commitment of 10 hours per month and prefers volunteers who can participate about one day per week. Volunteer shifts are offered at different times throughout the week, including some morning opportunities and shifts that run as late as 7 p.m. Because the schedule changes, check the current CACC volunteer calendar for available times.

Other Ways to Help CACC

Not every volunteer opportunity revolves around walking dogs. CACC also uses volunteers for adoption support, off-site events, vaccine and microchip clinics, social media and marketing. These roles can be a good fit for people who enjoy working with the public, helping at community events or contributing organizational and communications skills.
