Adopting a Dog Through PAWS Chicago
PAWS Chicago places a wide variety of dogs into permanent homes, including puppies, adult dogs, seniors, bonded pairs, and animals that have spent time recovering in foster care. Available dogs come from different backgrounds and may vary significantly in age, size, energy level, training, and medical history.
Many adoptable dogs receive extensive care before becoming available for placement. Depending on the individual animal, this may include veterinary treatment, behavioral support, foster care, or additional preparation intended to help them transition successfully into a new home.
Support Beyond the Adoption Day
One aspect that distinguishes PAWS Chicago’s adoption program is the level of support available after a dog goes home. In addition to the medical care and preventative services typically completed before adoption, adopters may also receive access to training resources, veterinary partner benefits, educational materials, and other programs designed to help with the transition into a new household.
PAWS Chicago also offers its Lifetime Guarantee program. If an adopter experiences circumstances that prevent them from caring for their dog in the future, the organization commits to helping ensure the animal remains protected and cared for rather than entering an uncertain situation.
Adoption Fees
Adoption fees vary based on the dog’s age and, in some cases, size. Fees help support the care, housing, medical treatment, and adoption services provided before placement.
| Dog Age / Category | Adoption Fee |
|---|---|
| Puppies under 4 months old | $550 |
| Puppies 4 months to 1 year | $500 |
| Dogs 1+ years old under 20 lbs | $450 |
| Dogs 1+ years old between 20–40 lbs | $400 |
| Dogs 1+ years old over 40 lbs | $300 |
| Dogs 8+ years old | $200 |
| Required pair (dogs adopted together) | $275 |
Available Dogs
Prospective adopters can browse available dogs online or visit the adoption center to learn more about individual animals. Many dog profiles include information about personality, activity level, training progress, medical considerations, and home preferences to help adopters make informed decisions.
Some dogs may also have foster reports available, providing additional insight into how they behave in a home environment rather than a shelter setting.
