PAWS Chicago

For more than two decades, PAWS Chicago has been one of the most recognized animal welfare organizations in the Chicago area, helping thousands of homeless dogs and cats find safe, loving homes. Their mission focuses on ending the euthanasia of homeless pets through adoption, foster care, medical support, spay/neuter programs and community outreach.

Whether you are looking to adopt a dog, foster a pet in need, volunteer, or support lifesaving programs across Chicago, PAWS Chicago offers multiple ways to get involved and make a difference.

Adopt a Dog Through PAWS Chicago

Adopting a rescue dog can change two lives at once – the pet you welcome home and the next homeless animal given a chance at safety. PAWS Chicago cares for dogs of all ages, sizes and personalities, including puppies, senior dogs and pets recovering from difficult situations.

Their adoption program focuses on thoughtful matchmaking to help dogs and families find the right fit. Many animals receive medical treatment, behavioral support, vaccinations and spay/neuter services before becoming available for adoption.

Foster a Homeless Pet

Fostering plays a critical role in saving lives, especially for puppies, large dogs, medical cases and animals recovering from stressful shelter environments. Foster homes provide temporary care while pets wait for permanent adopters.

By fostering through PAWS Chicago, local residents can help reduce shelter overcrowding while giving dogs a calmer environment to heal, socialize and thrive.

Many foster families discover that even a short-term commitment can make an enormous impact on a dog’s future.

Medical Care & Lifesaving Programs

PAWS Chicago is widely known for its major investment in animal medical care and shelter medicine. Their veterinary and rehabilitation programs help treat injured, neglected and medically vulnerable animals that might otherwise struggle to survive in overcrowded shelter systems.

The organization also operates extensive spay and neuter initiatives designed to reduce pet overpopulation across Chicago communities. Targeted spay/neuter efforts remain one of the most effective long-term solutions for lowering shelter intake numbers and preventing homelessness before it begins.

PAWS Chicago & 360@CACC

PAWS Chicago has also expanded its partnership with Chicago Animal Care and Control through the innovative 360@CACC initiative. This public-private partnership was created to support homeless and at-risk animals entering the city shelter system while improving adoption outcomes, medical access and pet retention resources throughout Chicago.

The program focuses on prevention, intervention, adoption support, transfer partnerships and expanded veterinary resources for vulnerable pets. It represents one of the largest collaborative animal welfare efforts currently operating in Chicago.

Making a difference

Chicago continues to face serious challenges involving pet homelessness, crowded shelters and rising intake numbers. PAWS Chicago addresses those problems through adoption, foster care, medical treatment, community outreach and preventative services, helping dogs move out of shelters and into safer, more stable situations.

Now the organization is expanding that work with a 20-acre Rescue Ranch in Hawthorn Woods. The former equestrian property is being transformed into a rehabilitation and adoption campus for dogs at high risk of euthanasia, with room for up to 80 dogs plus puppy litters. Larger dogs and those who struggle in a traditional shelter setting will have access to private outdoor patios, walking trails, hills and a pond where they can exercise, decompress and build confidence.

Plans for the property also include a veterinary medical center and high-volume spay and neuter clinic, expanding access to affordable and free care for families who need it.

The Rescue Ranch is expected to open in 2027, creating more space for homeless dogs who need time, treatment and a better chance to find the right home. Every adoption, foster placement, volunteer hour and donation helps make that larger effort possible.
