A Chicago Rescue Built Around Animals Others Overlook

Famous Fido works with animals facing difficult circumstances, including seniors, animals with medical needs and dogs whose fear, stress or behavior may make placement more complicated. Its work extends beyond moving animals quickly through the adoption process. The rescue emphasizes rehabilitation, responsible placement and finding guardians who understand the commitment each animal requires.

The organization maintains a physical boarding facility as well as a small foster network. Dogs receive veterinary checks, vaccinations, microchips and spay or neuter care before adoption. Training, structure and continued support may also be important for animals adjusting after neglect, abandonment or an extended shelter stay.

From an Unusual Chicago Business to Animal Rescue

Founder Gloria Lissner began helping homeless animals in the 1970s after opening a grooming business and gaining experience with frightened, neglected and abused dogs and cats. Animals were sometimes left at the business in boxes or abandoned outside, gradually turning her work toward rescue at a time when Chicago had far fewer organized rescue groups.

In 1980, Gloria opened the Famous Fido Doggie Deli, described as one of the world’s earliest dog bakeries. The deli is part of the organization’s history rather than its current operation. As more animals needed help, rescue, rehabilitation and advocacy became the lasting mission. Gloria later worked with Chicago Animal Care and Control’s Homeward Bound program to help animals leave the municipal shelter for adoption.

How Adoption Through Famous Fido Works

Adoption begins with an application. Famous Fido reviews the information to determine whether the household, expectations and available animal appear compatible. Applicants who may be a suitable match are contacted by phone or email and can then move toward a meet-and-greet with an adoption coordinator.

The process is intentionally more involved than choosing an animal from a photograph. Famous Fido wants adopters to understand the animal’s history, temperament, medical needs and adjustment period. Some dogs may need a quiet home, ongoing training, experienced handling or an adopter prepared to support a senior or special-needs animal.

Helping Animals Remain with Their Families

Famous Fido also places importance on intervention before an animal is surrendered. When circumstances allow, the rescue may help guardians explore resources, behavioral guidance or responsible rehoming instead of immediately placing the animal in a shelter. Preventing an unnecessary surrender can spare an animal another disruptive transition while preserving limited shelter space for animals in immediate danger.

This work reflects the organization’s broader goal of changing how people understand guardianship. Adoption is one part of the mission, but education, spay and neuter advocacy, microchipping, rehabilitation and responsible rehoming all contribute to reducing abandonment.
