Volunteer with Famous Fido Rescue

Volunteers help Famous Fido Rescue care for dogs and cats at its Irving Park adoption center while also supporting transportation, adoptions, outreach, events and the administrative work that keeps a small rescue operating.

Contact Famous Fido About Current Openings

Volunteer needs and schedules can change. Review Famous Fido’s current volunteer information, then contact the rescue about the role that interests you and the days or hours you can reliably contribute.

Who Can Volunteer?

Famous Fido asks volunteers to be at least 18 years old and comfortable working around rescue animals. Volunteers should be prepared to follow staff instructions, respect handling restrictions and understand that some animals may be frightened, stressed or still learning how to feel safe around unfamiliar people.

A volunteer waiver is required. Applicants should describe any previous animal experience, useful professional skills and the amount of time they can consistently commit. Reliability matters because the animals and shelter team depend on volunteers arriving for agreed-upon shifts.

Hands-On Work with Dogs

Dog handlers and walkers provide exercise, social contact and structured time outside an animal’s room or kennel area. Some dogs need patient rehabilitation and careful handling rather than an ordinary recreational walk. Volunteers must follow the rescue’s instructions about equipment, introductions, behavior and which dogs they are approved to handle.

People especially interested in working directly with dogs can review the rescue’s dog-handler opportunity. Training and role availability may depend on the rescue’s current population and staffing needs.

Volunteer Roles Beyond Dog Walking

Animal Care

Dog handling, dog walking, cat care, cleaning, feeding assistance and enrichment support.

Veterinary Transportation

Driving animals to veterinary appointments or other approved locations using a properly insured vehicle.

Adoption Support

Helping review applications, coordinate communication and support thoughtful matches after receiving appropriate training.

Intervention Support

Helping guardians locate resources or responsible alternatives that may prevent an unnecessary shelter surrender.

Events and Fundraising

Planning events, communicating with supporters, organizing donations and helping raise money for animal care.

Media and Photography

Creating photographs, videos and other content that helps individual animals and the rescue reach more people.

Administrative Help

Data entry, bookkeeping, grant writing, office organization and other behind-the-scenes work.

Facility Assistance

Cleaning, organization, maintenance and practical projects that keep the adoption center safe and functional.

Using Professional Skills to Help the Rescue

Not every valuable volunteer role involves direct animal handling. Famous Fido has sought help with bookkeeping, database work, grants, media creation, events and fundraising. These roles can be especially useful for people who have limited animal-care experience but can make a dependable professional contribution.

Some work may be completed remotely or through a combination of remote and in-person service. Discuss the current arrangement directly with Famous Fido rather than assuming that a listed opportunity is still open or entirely remote.

Court-Ordered Community Service

People seeking court-ordered community-service hours should tell Famous Fido before beginning. Do not assume that every assignment, schedule or required number of hours can be accommodated. Confirm eligibility, documentation and scheduling directly with the rescue in advance.
