Clear The Shelters returns to Chicago Animal Care and Control for the entire month of August 2026. Clear The Shelters is NBCUniversal Local’s annual nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign, presented in 2026 by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Throughout August, Chicago Animal Care and Control is joining the effort by waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats at CACC, giving Chicago residents a month-long opportunity to meet animals waiting for homes and bring home a new companion!
For animals waiting at CACC, this month can be the chance that changes everything. Chicago residents have more time to visit the shelter, meet dogs and cats looking for homes and find a companion who feels like the right fit. CACC is open daily from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone hoping to adopt that day should arrive by 5:30 p.m.
Take a look at the available animals before you visit, then come meet them in person! Ask questions, spend time getting to know them and think about the care, patience and commitment a new pet will need. One visit could be the beginning of a fresh start for both of you.

About Clear The Shelters
Clear The Shelters is NBCUniversal Local’s annual nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign. NBC and Telemundo stations work with shelters and rescues in their communities to encourage adoption and raise support for participating animal welfare organizations.
The 2026 campaign is the 12th annual Clear The Shelters event. It runs nationwide from August 1 through August 31, with participating shelters setting their own local adoption details. At CACC, adoption fees are waived for dogs and cats throughout the campaign.
If the time is not right to adopt a new animal, you can still help homeless pets by supporting the Clear The Shelters Fund. Donations help participating shelters and rescue organizations continue caring for animals in need and working to place them in loving homes.
