During the meet and greet, visitors may spend time walking with them, relaxing together in quieter interaction areas, or using toys and treats while getting to know them better. Some dogs become more playful outside the kennel environment while others simply appear calmer and more comfortable once things become less crowded.

Foster homes can provide dogs additional time to decompress and adjust to more stable daily routines outside the shelter. Rescue organizations may also provide veterinary support, food, crates, and other supplies during foster placement.

Some foster placements eventually become permanent adoptions after people spend more time together at home. Others remain temporary placements while the rescue continues searching for the right long term fit.
