Volunteer at the Animal Welfare League: Make a Real Difference
The Animal Welfare League needs committed volunteers to help animals every single day. If you want to be part of a lifesaving mission in the Chicago area, here’s what you need to know.
Who Can Volunteer
Teens (ages 15-18) and adults of all experience levels** are welcome. No prior shelter experience requiredβjust a willingness to show up and care.
The Commitment
The AWL asks for a realistic commitment that helps them plan and ensures animals get consistent care:
– Minimum 10-hour commitment
– At least 2 hours per volunteer shift
– **Regular, consistent attendance on your scheduled days
– Professional dress (comfortable pants, closed-toe shoes; they provide a volunteer shirt)
– No cell phones while volunteering
What Volunteers Do
Dog walking and socialization, cat care, adoption event support, administrative help, and more. Your specific role depends on the shelter’s needs and your interests.
Make a Difference
Many animals at the AWL arrive neglected, frightened, or in need of medical care. Volunteers provide the hands-on attention that helps them heal, become comfortable around people, and ready for adoption. Your consistent presence tells these animals that they matter and that humans can be trusted.
